Abstract

Abstract: This article discusses the book of Fara’id Al-Qur’an in the book Jam'u Jawami' al-Musannafat, a work of interpretation in Malay from Aceh. This research confirms that there was the stagnation in the production of the Malay Quranic exegesis texts in the early period. Although the manuscript contains a few pages only, the presence of the Fara’id Al-Qur’an has succeeded in generating the productivity of the Qur’anic exegesis at the end of the 17th to the 19th centuries. The text was positioned more as the text of inheritance jurisprudence (fiqh waris) than that of the Qur’anic exegesis independently. The author is anonymous, but to be certain was a scholar whose position was very important in the Sultanate of Aceh. The Reference of Fara’id Al-Qur’an exegesis cannot be determined and has a difference with the text of Tarjuman al-Mustafid and al-Jalalain. This study corrects the mistakes of the previous research stating that the Fara’id Al-Qur’an only interpreted Surah an-Nisa'/4: 11-12, whereas the interpretation of the 176 verse is also included in the book.

Abstract

This article analyzes the meaning of contextual word of ahl in surah an-Nisa'/4: 58 through the approach of ma‘na-cum-magza of Sahiron Syamsuddin’s which was then linked with the context of the Qur’anic scholarship in Indonesia. In the understanding of the revelation era, ahl refer to Usman ibn Talhah as a man who was expert in keeping the key of the Ka’bah. The meaning of the word ahl was apparently not a single one, but experiencing variations between one interpretation and others, from classic to modern-contemporary. So the meaning of ahl can be developed in the current context of Indonesia, including the context of the Qur’anic scholarship. This article discussed the initial understanding (ma‘na) ahl through context analysis (micro and macro) and linguistic analysis (intra-textuality and inter-textuality) critically. Furthermore, this study draws significant understanding of ahl which is linked with the discourse of Qur’anic scholarship in Indonesia as the person who studies the Qur’an seriously. The term ahl thus could legitimize the Qur’anic scholar as ahl Al-Qur’ān. Who has a comprehensive, responsible, to be fair in interpreting the Qur’an. They are those are the Qur’anic scholars who have a competence and responsibility and just attitude in interpreting the Qur’an. Keywords: Ma‘na-cum-magza, contextual interpretation, Sahiron Syamsuddin, ahl.

Abstract

In his book Nizam Al-Qur'an wa Ta’wil Al-Furqan bi Al-Furqan, al-Farahi (1863-1930), an Indian scholar, based his ideas on the wholeness of the surah in the structure of the Qur’an based on a number of assumptions: the coherent relationship between one verse and the next verses as well as the inter-connection relationship between one narrative and another in one surah into the wholeness (za wahdaniyyah). This article tries to analyze al-Farahi’s method of interpretation in the form of munasabah al-ayat, nazm, ‘amud and to evaluate his method. The author concludes that al-Farahi’s basic assumption is that the sura is a wholeness. The analytical method is a linguistic approach that includes mufradat (lexicology analysis), nahw (syntax), uslub (stylistics), mawaqi’ at-tadabbur (the place of reflection) and nazm (structure). Al-Farahi made al-Qur’an the primary source, because it interprets one another. Sources of interpretation outside of the Qur’an (hadith, asar and divine books) are secondary sources of interpretation which are positioned below the Qur’an. Al-Farahi concluded that the surah has one mandate, which he later called it as ‘amud. Keywords: Al-Farahi, munasabah, nazm, ‘amud, coherence.

Abstract

This paper departs from the problem of misinterpretation of religious texts that need to be traced sociologically and historically into Indonesian Islamic scientific literature, particularly the Qur’anic Exegesis literature. Further this writing tries to look for the middle path or even as an anti-thesis to those misinterpretations. To know the thought of Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, that of Hamka, and that of Quraish Shihab on religious moderation, the author uses a historic-sociological approach. The result of this study concludes that their conception in general can be described as follows: First, from the aspect of definition, Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, Hamka, and Quraish Shihab have interpreted religious moderation comprehensively. Second, there are seven dimensions of religious moderation being supplemented by its indicators namely moderation in the aspects of theology, that of worship, that of relationship (mu’amalah), that of law, that of creation of man and the universe, and that of the government and culinary. These seven dimensions of moderation are highly relevant to the context of Indonesian society which is maritime, plural, heterogeneous as well as multiethnic, linguistic and religious. Key words: Moderation, Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, Hamka, Quraish Shihab.

Abstract

AbstractThe Qur’anic exegetical development is in some ways always related to the background of its production. The relations between the exegete as the author and the text which becomes his or her work is very important to discuss. One of the representative examples of exegetical movement of Shi’a is Muhammad Husain Fadlullah (1935-2010) who is considered to be the spiritual mentor for the Hizbullah movement in Lebanon. The method used in this research is a library research with descriptive, analysis and comparative in its character. The result of this research shows that the Quranic Exegesis cannot stop in the area of linguistic discourse only and its meaning cannot be trapped at the level of linguistic understanding, and that the meaning of the Qur’an should not be limited at the level of logos only. In this regard, Fadlullah calls Muslim community to use of the Qur’an as a source and principle for all movements in everyday life. Abstract

Abstract The new media revolution has given the freedom to the religious authority (Islam), both the old authority and the new one to contest to win the hearts of the people. The fact is that the public sphere is being controlled by the new religious authority with a radical and intolerant face of Islam. Apart from the government and educational institutions, the effort to dispel extremism through counter narratives are also carried out by civil society by campaigning Islamic moderation. This article discusses the dissemination of the moderation reasoning of the Pop Tafsir of Gus Baha’ on YouTube. The focus of this article is on the aspect of contestation to the new authority as an effort to deradicalize the interpretation. Using virtual ethnographic data, this paper draws conclusions. First, the dissemination of the miracle reconstruction of the Qur’an and argumentative logic in preaching. Second, the dissemination of the urgency of the nasikh-mansukh as a critic of the kaffah Islamic movement and as the priority of moderation reasoning in the loyal attitude to maintain the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia from the threat of separatism. Third, disseminating counter-narratives that use God’s status to dispel extremism and radicalism Keywords: Contestation, Gus Baha’, Moderation Reasoning, Pop Tafsīr.

Abstract

This article studies local elements being exist in the Madurese translation of Qur’anic Exegesis of Jalālain by Abdul Majid Tamim. By using Gadamer’s hermeneutics, this article argues the local elements in terms of its writing and translation styles as well as its contents are being used in this work. To be seen from its writing style, this work uses Madurese pegon and gandul meaning which reflects the author personality that the author was the keeper of the pesantren tradition. The method of his translation is both literal and interpretative translation. Majid Tamim seemed to be responsive to the social problems that happened in his surrounding. Some of the examples he tauched are the carok local tradition, the use of rice for the fidyah payment, and the importance of keeping the pesantren tradition. These local elements were formed asthe result of Tamim’s dialogues with the cultural, religious and linguistic background as his reference in one hand and his dialogue with the heritage of language, that of religious system and that of social and cultural of the Madurase where he lived on the other. This Qur’anic translation also proves the existence of the ulama of the pesantren in Java and Madura networks which is linked to the Middle East. KeywordsLocality, Tafsīr al-Jalālain, Majid Tamim, Madura.
